Liked the 5 things a church could spend on… post.
Perhaps the whole idea of church needs to be re-thunk anyway. Consider the ‘salt of the earth’ argument. If JC followers are supposed to be the salt of the earth, then why in this big slow cooker we call the world, does all the salt gather in one place? If you prepared a hearty meal and added salt for flavor but then the salt decided that it wanted to hang out with other like-minded salt crystals in, lets say a carrot, then you’ll have one salty assed carrot and the rest of the meal will be bland.
Mix it up Christians! Don’t hide your light under a bushel, the biggest bushel in the community is generally a church building. Get out there and spread the salt. If a church is big enough to need a committee for anything at all, it’s too damn big.
Forgive my generalist ranting. I liked the article.
Mr Shultz
I like that according to Mr Shultz we are going to start re-thunking in stead of re-thinking. Maybe thunking is the way forward for all those have thinked themselves into complacency.
Maybe a little thunking will call people to act instead of praying and expecting.
Count me in for some re-thunking, and I agree that we can do our thunking from whereever we are.
No-ones likes a salty carrot.

Someone drew my attention to your article on 5 things a church ought to spend money on instead of buildings and although I think there are significant flaws in your presentation, instead of commenting on them I want to express my strong support of the vision you have for the magazine – I love it! Stoop. What a great word that captures so much what our God is like (among other attributes of course). I love your concern to stir us up to not simply drift with popular modernist culture or even popular Christian culture. Good on you for seeking to get back to the guts of what Jesus is about and question the assumptions we make about how to follow him.
In all of that I trust you see the absolute importance of getting back to what the Bible actually says if we are to ensure we are faithful to Jesus and his mission and not our own version. No Christian group thinks of itself as leaving behind the Jesus of the Bible and yet there are so many differences among us – our failure to stoop being just one of them. Critical to being faithful to him will be the process of holding all our opinions up to his word to test to see if what we say is true. In fact, dare I say, one test of our genuine humility is our openness to having all our views tested against God’s word as other brothers and sisters draw our attention to possible misunderstandings of that word. Without that process it will simply be our own personal biases masquerading as God given conviction. Look forward to seeing that discussion as I dip into Stoop. Love it.
Thanks
